📖 What is URL Encoding (Percent-Encoding)?
URL encoding (also known as percent-encoding) is a mechanism for converting characters into a format that can be transmitted safely over the Internet. It replaces unsafe ASCII characters and non-ASCII characters with a "%" followed by two hexadecimal digits. The RFC 3986 standard mandates this format to ensure that browsers and servers parse addresses and query parameters reliably without ambiguity.
encodeURIComponent()
Used for query parameter values. Encodes separators like & = ? : / so the parameter does not break the main URL structure.
encodeURI()
Used for complete URLs. Preserves protocol, path separators, and query markers while encoding spaces and Unicode characters.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is a space encoded in URLs? ▼
Under RFC 3986, spaces are encoded as "%20". In HTML form post submissions (application/x-www-form-urlencoded), spaces may also be represented with a plus sign "+".
Do you store or log my encoded URLs? ▼
No! All encoding and decoding operations happen entirely in your local browser using client-side JavaScript. Your text or URLs never touch our servers.
